Our methodology
The Telegraph gathered data on the 100 most liveable commuter towns with a direct train link to London in 90 minutes or less. This was determined according to:
Green space The proportion of homes with accessible green space of 2 hectares or larger with 15 mins walk (1 kilometre), according to Defra data. This includes playing fields, parks, nature reserves, woodlands and golf courses. Private land, including fields used for farming, are not taken into account.
Good schools The average Ofsted grade of primary and secondary schools in town, according to the latest management information published by the regulator. Ofsted assigns schools a score ranging from 1 "Outstanding" to 4 "Inadequate".
Entertainment The number of pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes per 1,000 residents, through comparison of Food Standards Agency data and populations per Built Up Area in 2022.
We subsequently added ratings for:
House price The average house price (detached, semi-detached, terraced, flats and maisonettes) per Built Up Area in 2024 according to HM Land Registry transaction records over the most recent six months.
Travel time the duration of the quickest rail journey to a major London terminus at 9am on a Monday morning using the TravelTime API.
Season ticket National Rail annual pricing for weekday travel.
The boundaries of towns and villages were determined using Built Up Areas, an Office for National Statistics measurement that uses Ordnance Survey topographic data to recognise the outline of a developed area.
